ABSTRACT
The essay deals with one of the most popular Middle High German poets of the later Middle Ages, Heinrich von Meißen, known as Frauenlob, who died in 1318. Frauenlob revived the medieval love poetry as well as the so-called Sangspruchdichtung (poems and songs dealing with religion, politics, ethics, and the science of nature). He also wrote three so-called Leichs, long songs about the Virgin Mary, love, and the crucifix that were very complex in form and content.
