ABSTRACT
It used to be thought that Johan Huizinga followed no method in Autumntide of the Middle Ages, his most influential work. In fact, Huizinga was deeply methodological within his chosen field of ‘General History’, as a result of his training, teaching, and research. In turn, the historical discipline continues to regard him as an innovator, notably in the fields of cultural history and the history of emotions.
