A Carolingian monk, Lupus of Ferrières was a man of deep learning, especially in the Roman classics. His correspondence reveals the networks he cultivated to maintain and defend his monastery, his interest in books and learning, and his attempts to navigate conflicts between his vocation as a monk and a member of the king’s inner circle. He was the epitome of a public intellectual.
