ABSTRACT

A German architect and sculptor, Madern Gerthener was master of the works of the city of Frankfurt; in this function he built bridges and fortifications, but his major achievement was the transept and tower of the church of St. Bartholomew. He also worked for the king and other patrons at nearby sites, including Mainz cathedral, the church of St. Katherine at Oppenheim, and perhaps Heidelberg and/or Speyer. Figural works attributed to him include portal sculpture and tombs.
