ABSTRACT
In this entry we provide an overview of the psychology of police interrogations. We begin by outlining the scope of this entry and how we define the term interrogation therein. We review the study of interrogation, the practical applications of common techniques, and the psychological effects of being interrogated. We discuss suspect characteristics, such as youth and mental illness, which present special considerations in the interrogation room. We conclude this entry by examining the psychological processes behind the decision to confess.
