Description Biographia Literaria and Sibylline Leaves were originally to have formed two halves
of a single work when published in 1814; that publication, however, never
materialized, and the sheets were finally issued, years later, by Rest Fenner, a
London publisher. The Preface is a fascinating apology by Coleridge; it has received
too little coverage, and the entire thing is given in this illustation and the one
that follows.
