ABSTRACT
I worked on scores of plays before I read Aristotle or Stanislavski. Studying philosophy at the University of Chicago and squeezing in theatre rehearsals on evenings and weekends, I came to theatre as a pastime. I acted, designed lights, and directed plays without a solid historical background. I improvised my way through rehearsals, teaching myself through trial and error.
