ABSTRACT
This is a book about a movement to change schools on a grand scale. Over the past five years, we have had unique opportunities to examine the "scaling up" phenomenon, which involves the transfer of school reform models that have been successful in one or a few schools to many schools. The scaling up of externally developed school reform designs is occurring at an unprecedented rate, affecting thousands of schools in the United States and elsewhere. There are currently more than 1300 Accelerated Schools, more than 1000 schools in the Coalition of Essential Schools, more than 500 schools implementing the Comer School Development Program, more than 800 Core Knowledge schools, over 1600 Success for All schools, over 700 schools implementing the Achievement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, and more than 2000 schools implementing New American Schools reform designs. All of these reform designs were originally implemented in one location and, as they became successful, were exported by design teams and adopted by educators in other locations.
