ABSTRACT
While democracy provides increased voice and influence for the poor than non-democratic systems, many emerging democracies in developing countries are constantly struggling to achieve high rates of economic growth and reduce poverty. And the continued high rates of poverty not just in Malawi but also in other African countries beg the question as to whether democracies can indeed turn things around. Why is the democratic record at development and poverty reduction not better?
