ABSTRACT

The Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) is reaching its milestone of 20 years of existence. Countries across the globe have implemented it in various forms and directions as highlighted in the chapters of this book. Some regions of the world have achieved success with their planning and policies for older people, whereas other parts of the world are still grappling with population ageing issues. This chapter puts together information related to the momentum that the different countries have shown towards advancing the ageing agenda and ensuring the health, well-being, social and economic inclusion, and rights of older people everywhere. The chapter reviews the opportunities which various governments and civil society members had to build synergies in taking forward the implementation of MIPAA and suggests given certain visible shortcomings what can be done to give standing to taking MIPAA forward. This chapter appreciates the material presented by different contributing authors in terms of their experiences and collating the achievements as well as the outcomes of the ageing policy and programmes. Concluding remarks suggest a range of measures such as ensuring income security, providing a continuum of caregiving, developing health care provisions, strengthening age-friendly environments and taking forward age-related research for securing older people in different cultures and continents.
