ABSTRACT

The concept of sustainable homeservices was defined in the first chapter. What did we find when searching for empirical examples of potentially sustainable services in the seven focal service areas? Before beginning the search for good examples, the concept of sustainable homeservice needed to be operationalized. For this purpose, we developed a relatively simple methodology for the assessment of the sustainability of services offered to households, called the Service Sustainability Evaluation Tool. The method is a fairly commonsensical approach, and its main contribution to the existing research is that it systematically develops indicators for not only environmental - which is the scope of much of the present indicator work - but also social and economic sustainability from the vantage point of household services. Furthermore, it seeks to integrate the different indicators into one screening instrument.
