ABSTRACT

As with many early watershed management programmes, the Sukhomajri programmebegan as a result of the connections between a major urban centre, Chandigarh, and a rural upstream village, Sukhomajri. Floods, poor water quality and sedimentation downstream in Chandigarh were found to be linked to poverty, land degradation and erosion in Sukhomajri, and it was these linkages that gave rise to the programme in the 1970s.
