ABSTRACT
Great Barrington in western Massachusetts is one of those small American towns that has bucked the trend. It still has a high street full of locally owned shops and a thriving network of local banks. It has access to a range of local food, which is fresh and healthy. There is life in Great Barrington, when – in thousands of other places from there to the Pacific – town centres are windswept places devoid of life, business or people.
