ABSTRACT

Educators have long assumed that writing is a healthy and important mode of communication. Medical research now confirms that brief structured writing sessions can significantly improve mental and physical health for some groups of people. Furthermore, these benefits accrue when people write for short periods of time (15-20 minutes) over 3 days. The surprising finding that short episodes of focused writing can improve physical and mental health has energized a research program among psychologists and medical scientists, but writing researchers have yet to join this community.
