ABSTRACT

Sports are important at many universities, but you don’t have to be a university student to appreciate a good college football game. The city of Columbus, Ohio, gets energized every Saturday when the Ohio State University football team (the Buckeyes) plays, and the mood of the city changes tangibly. On the day of the game, Columbus residents hang flags with the university insignia from their porches and the highways and major streets seem to empty at game time. Of course, almost everyone in Columbus likes to believe that the Buckeyes are destined for the national title, and at the beginning of the season anything is possible. No doubt this scene is repeated in college towns throughout the nation.
