Action at a Distance Versus Not (Social vs. Mechanical Interactions). Social objects often act on other social objects at a distance and over substantial time delays. Such patterns are much less common for simple mechanical interactions (cf. R. Gelman & Spelke, 1981; Gergely, Nadasdy, Csibra, & Biro, 1995).
