ABSTRACT

Peer counselors help students to explore feelings, plans, and decisions so that the individual seeking help perceives support and guidance. The American Psychological Association (APA; 1982) defined peer counseling to capture the restrictions we identify: "Peer counseling is defined as supervised performance of limited counselor functions by persons of approximately the same age or status as the counselee" (p. 124). Finally, there is increasing interest in developing peer counseling programs outside of schools, in youth and community centers and other neighborhood drop-in facilities (Carr, 1988).
