ABSTRACT

Place-Value Concepts Our written number system is a positional-no-

tation or place-value system because the position of a digit determines its value. For example, the digit 4 in 4270, 2470, and 2740, and 2704 represents different values by virtue of its position: four one-thousands (4 x 1000 or 4000), four one-hundreds (4 x 100 or 400), four tens (4 x 10 or 40), and four ones (4 x 1 or 4), respectively.
