ABSTRACT
As the shape of culture changes, the inward and outward pulls create a tension between, as well as within, the generations. Some Norteños fear the centrifugal force of the public domain-everything authoritative that occurs outside the community. They question whether the achievements of public individuality need to develop at the expense of private individuality-everything familial and intimate that occurs within the community.1
