ABSTRACT
The United States is the principal defender in the contemporary world of the values and institutions of freedom. Diminish our power, and the power of these ideals is necessarily diminished. Defend and enhance our power, and those values are necessarily defended and enhanced. Thus, we both recognize that the defense of American security interests is, and should be faced as, a compelling moral imperative.
