ABSTRACT
In February 1848, while the social upheavals which had spawned the Fourierist phalanxes were on the wane, the foundations for a new commune were laid. It was located in upstate New York in the “burned-over district” near Lake Oneida. The founders were a group of religiously motivated, well-established New Englanders and New Yorkers.
