ABSTRACT
In the giant Sequoia forests on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada in central California a communal settlement was established in 1887. It was situated in majestic scenery at the foot of Kaweah Mountain. This commune was to become the forerunner of several attempts to establish indigenous American socialist colonies on the West Coast.
