ABSTRACT
After 1956 the regime became less oppressive. Kolkhozy, or collective farms, the specialité de la maison of the communist system, basically ceased to exist in Poland thanks to communist party leader Władysław Gomułka; the open war against the Church was abandoned; and the security services’ regime of terror directed against defiant citizens clearly subsided.
