ABSTRACT
The presentation of findings in the next few chapters follows the general outline of the interview schedule, which -it will be recalled-proceeds from the vacancy to the search to the replacement. Two chapters will be devoted to each of these categories. We begin here with a general description of how and why vacancies occurred in the liberal arts departments of our sample of major universities in the academic years 1954-55 and 1955-56.
