ABSTRACT

TO ALL concerned with the social sciences, or aware of what they promise to mankind’s future, the dedication of a building to research in these fields is an occasion for thanksgiving. One of the ablest bands of inquirers into human behavior is here provided with technical equipment of unequaled excellence. Not less important, the university plans to give these investigators full opportunity to use the building. What mechanical facilities, clerical assistance, and time to think can do toward helping thought is here offered more abundantly than elsewhere. The fortunate workers who profit immediately by these opportunities will promote the efforts of their colleagues wherever research in the social sciences is going forward. In years to come, men may look back upon the ceremony in which we are now sharing with much the feeling we now cherish for the opening of Liebig’s chemical laboratory at Giessen, 103 years ago—a brief interval in the history of human culture.
