ABSTRACT

The Brahman Headman of the village of Gopalpur owns about 200 acres, one-sixth of the village lands. The most valuable portion of this property is a shady garden and orchard located on the banks of the perennial stream that bisects the village lands. The heart of this old and well-established garden is a shrine dedicated to the Lingayat deity Basavanna. Proper attention must be paid to this deity if he is to continue to bless and sanctify the garden.
