ABSTRACT
The objective thus far has been to demonstrate that there are reasonable grounds for continuing to study in human societies the hypothesis, developed through animal research, that populations tend toward adjustment of their numbers to the carrying capacity of the environment. One must confront, however, the unmistakable evidence that in some instances population-limiting responses remain relatively inactive even after a generation or more during which there is widespread suffering from scarcity.
