ABSTRACT

Education among the Chiga contains none of the formal features which we so often find in East Africa. There is no development of the age-grade idea, no formal schooling, and very little compulsion of any sort. Chiga children, like Topsy, just grow. They learn the ways of their culture by observation and participation, and only occasionally by precept. And they grow up differing from each other in skills, interests, character and habits, but all within a limited range of cultural standardization.
