ABSTRACT

A variety of approaches evolved within the framework of the Boas tradition, from analytic quantification to subjective interpretations of cultural wholes. The essential quality of this body of materials has not been that of a school with unified methodology and common goals, but rather as Lowie and Kroeber pointed out long ago, a series of offshoots all more or less illustrative of some particular facet of the Boas training. The wide scope of Boas’s interests and his catholicity of theory, were productive of a variety of fruitful approaches to the study of Man and Culture.
