ABSTRACT
There is clearly no reason why the three main functions of the acute hospital – emergency care, elective surgery and outpatient consultations – should have similar economic and clinical characteristics. All they do have in common, within the British hospital system, is that they are normally carried out by the same people working within the same institution.
