ABSTRACT
The case for providing care in the concentrated form known as a general hospital lies in the belief that links exist between the distinct functions which take place within it, which are important either because they lead to better quality of care or because they offer cost advantages. These links may be of various kinds – clinical, financial, managerial – and different considerations apply to each.
