ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 documents internal military communications during the morning of 1 October 1965. It shows Suharto sent telegrams to Indonesian’s Inter-Regional Military Commanders on this day, before these orders were sent to Indonesia’s Provincial Military Commanders. It presents evidence Sumatra’s Inter-Regional Military Commander issued an order for the military to “annihilate” the 30 September Movement at midnight. It additionally records how Aceh’s Military Commander, Ishak Djuarsa, issued an order on 4 October stating it was “mandatory” for civilians to “assist the military” to implement its annihilation campaign. These are the first such orders that have ever been found.
