ABSTRACT
In this chapter I will provide a theoretical framework for the study of personality cults. I will first provide a critical survey of the existing literature and of some case studies and then try to find an operational definition; subsequently, I will discuss the kind of contexts that are more likely to give rise to personality cults. The various theoretical issues related to nationalism and nation-building will instead be dealt with in the last chapter.
