I was very anxious to know what Blizzard had thought of Maria, though I could not devise any means of discovering his opinion. I might have been satisfied, perhaps, with his riding on without speaking to her; but it did not follow that he thought no more about her, or that he did not return by the cottage. If I had thought of this sooner, I should certainly have protracted my stay there; but I was at Lyndhurst before the idea struck me. I had not mentioned the fantastic gentleman to Maria at all: my mind was too full of what was to me a more interesting subject; and after her thoughts had been turned into a similar channel, it was not likely that she would trouble herself about him and his impertinent quizzing-glass.
