ABSTRACT

The planner’s universe is expanding. Historically, the public sector has been the domain of planners, and their traditional focus has been land use and urban design. Increasingly, though, planners are finding work—and a growing range of work—in the private sector and in nonprofit organizations. And they are finding opportunities to plan for much more than the optimum use of land and the built environment. Technological advances, meanwhile, are changing the nature of the workplace and the direction of many careers. People starting out in the planning field have opportunities that did not exist a generation ago.
