ABSTRACT
The extinction of species is of fundamental concern to conservation bodies. For example, The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Nature Resources (IUCN) keeps detailed information on the status of species threatened with extinction in their Red Data Book series. Analyses of the data 'stimulate conservation activities, the results of which are then fed back into the system to determine new conservation priorities' (IUCN, 1988).
