ABSTRACT

What is self-determination? Is it determination by the self, or determination of the self? In the former sense, what are determined are the objects of various choices, such as what to wear, where to live and which job to have. These are determined by the self, as opposed to being determined by other people, or by the state. This is what the negative conception of freedom understands by self-determination. It is a natural given, provided that nobody interferes with one's choices. In other words, all people are self-determining because they have freedom of choice.
