ABSTRACT

Eradicating poverty and restructuring society (and economy) were the main objectives of Malaysia’s re-distributive policies, through the New Economic Policy (NEP) that has been exercised since 1971. Under the NEP, four important regional development strategies have been used. Of the four, two main strategies are industrial dispersal and new land development. The other two regional strategies are in-situ rural development, and rural urbanisation and creation of new growth centres. The NEP objectives were to be achieved through rapid ‘growth with equity’.
