ABSTRACT

Kokkonen's sole opera The Last Temptations is unquestionably the most successful Finnish opera of all time: with over three hundred performances to date, the only opera that has approached it in popularity is Leevi Madetoja's Pohjalaisia (The Ostrobothnians). However, Madetoja's work predates Kokkonen's by fifty years, making the reception history of Kokkonen's opera all the more impressive. In addition, The Last Temptations is the most performed Finnish opera outside of Finland— foreign performances of the work have occurred in Berlin, London, New York, Oslo, Stockholm, Wiesbaden and Zürich.
