ABSTRACT
Not only does environmental conflict have a long story: the arc of that history can take on a variety of forms. This chapter takes an extended historical case study in the Owens Valley of eastern California and traces four differing types of environmental conflict that occurred there over time. These four stories involve different actors, resources, conflicts, and issues. The environment however hardly changed except to suffer from human actions. It shows the environment causing conflict and leading to cooperation.
