ABSTRACT
In a future paper, “Toward a more Optimistic View of What Analysts Can Achieve,” I will discuss the possibility that our aspirations for our patients are unnecessarily low. Now, it appears to me, more specifically, that we are not taking advantage of some vast discoveries that Freud offered us. In so doing, we have, so to speak, retreated from the battlefield. We have declared ourselves at least partially impotent.
