ABSTRACT

125 More than 1,300 hazardous waste sites threatened environmental quality in the United States in 2016, and industries released 3.4 billion pounds of toxic chemicals. 1 Every individual, firm, and government faces decisions that affect environmental quality. Many of these decisions could be improved. The appropriate size and scope of environmental initiatives depends on the enormity of impending problems. Regrettably, views of environmental quality are clouded by misinformation and biased by personal agendas. Fervor for votes, profits, or environmental concerns may blind some politicians, manufacturers, and environmentalists from moderate (and more accurate?) standpoints. Such distractions from the best available information are a problem with global repercussions.
