ABSTRACT
The published literature on ‘agricultural origins’ is characterized by a confusing multiplicity of terms for the conceptual categories that define our discourse. There is little agreement about what precisely is meant by such terms as agriculture, horticulture, cultivation, domestication and husbandry. This semantic confusion militates against clear thinking about the phenomena we investigate, leads to misunderstanding and can provoke unnecessary disputes over interpretation of the evidence.
