ABSTRACT

The Introduction set the context by discussing the overarching Post-Cognitivist approach I have chosen to pursue in this text. It introduced the inter-related themes of embodied cognition, the criticism mounted by Herbert Dreyfus against AI, the New AI of Rodney Brooks, which some commentators—erroneously I my opinion—consider to be a resolution of the problems identified by Dreyfus, Edelman’s Neural Darwinism, the psychoanalytic position of Freud and Lacan, and other more formal approaches to consciousness and cognition, drawing on topos theory.
