ABSTRACT

Danny and Alena Chebet were raised Catholic in Kenya. Alena said that “Catholic guilt” shaped their outlook on marriage to some degree. She explained that if they were to ever divorce or separate, it would “let their families and culture down.” No one in her family has divorced or separated, which led her to believe that “divorce is not an option.” By contrast, Alena believed that American-born blacks have a more individualistic view of marriage than the Africans she knew.
