ABSTRACT
If Robinson Crusoe offers a model for the reading of colonial fiction, it cannot serve as an introduction to the literary history of colonial writing. For this we turn to three closely related literary traditions which had an important place in the literary history of the nineteenth century: the exotic novel, the adventure story and the literary exploration of America.
