ABSTRACT
The five case studies provide us with a detailed and focused description of the development, implementation, and operation of community service programs. The objective of this chapter is to move beyond mere description and to examine more closely the evidence and subsequent status of institutionalization across all the site visit schools. Recall that the five broad categories of institutionalization indicators are: Program Centrality; Allocation of Resources; Administrative Commitment; Program Routinization; and Astute Program Leadership. In addition to analyzing the indicators within the cases, recurring patterns of evidence (themes) associated with the indicators across the cases are also presented (Community Service Programs: Important But Secondary; Community Service and the Academic Budget; School Heads and Service: Detached Cheerleaders; Community Service and Routine: Fear of Formalism; and Program Leadership: Altruism and Self-Interest). While these themes represent patterns across the cases, they should not be construed as being generalizable to all the cases or to all independent school community service programs.
