The service program at Ignatius, a Jesuit school, started in 1977; however, the catalyst for such a program was Vatican II eleven years earlier. An association of Jesuit schools led its members through an exhaustive examination of school-based service. Unlike the other schools studied, the program’s original director has left the school; his departure was viewed by the administration as an opportunity to redesign the program. The ‘86–87 academic year was dedicated to planning a new, more integrated program for the following year.
