The head of the upper school pushed for the implementation of a formal service program. He convinced the headmaster, a longtime associate, to allocate one-half of a teacher’s salary to service program leadership. A teacher/coordinator was hired in 1981, and he has had tremendous success in attracting students to the service program. While close to 80% of the upper school currently participate in the program, the headmaster has been unwilling to allocate funds beyond the coordinator’s salary to support the program. The program’s future, despite strong student interest, seems uncertain given the head’s reluctance to commit resources to the program.
