ABSTRACT

The goal of the study—understanding the processes and factors that appear to be associated with those service programs that either seem to be institutionalized or that have the best prospects of becoming institutionalized—requires that we first consider community service programs (the innovation) and the context in which they operate (independent schools). This chapter addresses the following questions: (1) What is community service in the context of independent schools? (2) What are the broad rationales underlying school-based community service programs? and (3) What is unique about the organizational context in which service programs operate?
